Café Gandolfi
Tim’s first major commission was initiated by Ian MacKenzie, a technical assistant in the graphics department at GSA, who was planning to open a café in the Merchant City area of Glasgow.
Featuring tables, benches and chairs to seat around sixty people, as well as a large bar and clock, Café Gandolfi was unlike anything else in the city at that time and was an immediate success from its opening in 1979 and has continued trading up to this day.
There was no specific criteria for the furniture so Tim was able to be very creative with the furniture, developing his passion for wood and experimenting with form, pushing the furniture towards sculpture and developing his own unique style.
The success of Café Gandolfi also ensured that there was a steady stream of customers for the furniture as people who had experienced the furniture at Gandolfi’s would find their way to The Steading and commission their own pieces, sometimes decades after having initially spent time with it in Glasgow.
People are still being very well looked after at Café Gandolfi.
