Sunroom Doors Restoration

Between 2023 and 2024, the two sunroom doors at The Steading were carefully restored by David Lightly of The Wood Neuk, supported by funding from a private trust.

This work focused on the repair and reinstatement of the outer sunroom door, a distinctive feature within the building. The restoration retained and reactivated a number of original elements, including the axe head handle, hand-shaped timber panelling and the sliding lock, each reflecting the detail and character embedded throughout the Steading.

The process was undertaken with close attention to material and construction, drawing on the knowledge and continuity of making held within The Wood Neuk, whose practice remains directly connected to Tim Stead’s workshop.

With the work now complete, the door once again opens out onto the garden, re-establishing a simple but important connection between the interior of the Steading and the landscape beyond.

This project forms part of the Trust’s ongoing programme of care, where individual elements of the building are restored in a way that supports both their continued use and their long-term preservation.
